don’t let people relate to you… that’s how they get you
this was meant to be a pun but i’m glad people are getting something out of it
Ezi, 22, (she/her or they/them pronouns). Asexual/Panromantic/nonbinary. Very friendly!!
A group of researchers from the UK and Canada have looked into this very problem and recently published a paper on their work in the open access journal arXiv. What they found is worrisome for current generative AI technology and its future: "We find that use of model-generated content in training causes irreversible defects in the resulting models."
"Over time, mistakes in generated data compound and ultimately force models that learn from generated data to misperceive reality even further," [...] "We were surprised to observe how quickly model collapse happens: Models can rapidly forget most of the original data from which they initially learned."
So, in short: AI models could either stagnate or collapse entirely because as more AI-generated stuff gets uploaded to the internet, the more it bleeds into the training data for AI models
There is hope yet!
This essentially makes training new Ai models or improving already existing ones impossible, because it's like making a copy of a copy of a copy
And yes, Ai might feel a different from all the other tech buzzword bandwagons of the past few years.
But I am pretty confident that's only because there aren't any a huge financial or technological hurdles to using it.
For crypto, you needed quite a bit of money and tech knowledge, same with NFTs. And even if you had both, this stuff seemed rightfully fucking pointless to most people.
To use Ai, you just had to go to a free website and type in a few words, and it even seems pretty useful to your average Joe who has yet to notice that the Ai constantly makes shit up.
Also, good luck replacing writers with something that can't even do basic fucking math.
While the above is true, there are ways to handle the question if you get asked it in an interview.
Just bc the interviewer ASKS it, doesn't mean you have to ANSWER it.
"do you have reliable transportation?"
"Yes."
That's it. Do not elaborate. Do. Not.
They do not need to know what that type of transportation is. They do not have the RIGHT to ask what that transportation is. Many questions interviewers ask, they ask because they bank on you not knowing it's illegal.
If they press the issue? Be calm, be polite, but be firm.
"what kind of transportation?"
"Reliable transportation. With respect, you're not legally allowed to ask that question."
If they push again? Get firmer.
"I see what you're doing. You're attempting to stonewall me into answering a question that you're not legally allowed to ask, because of preconceived prejudices you may hold. The way you're handling this issue is proof that you would not be a good fit for me as an employer, and I'm ending the interview."
...then collect your belongings and fucking WALK OUT.
I was going to put this in the tags, but fuck it. Some companies will also list some horseshit like “must have valid drivers license” as a requirement when the job requires no driving as a way to get around this. Be wary of those folks, too.
I grew up in poverty, and I spent a lot of time very poor as an adult, and that thing where you just strongly assert your rights then get up and walk out of an interview? Yeah, LOL, that doesn’t happen when you have zero money and you desperately need that job. Because the second you assert your rights, you know for a fact that you aren’t getting that job, and no matter how much of an asshole you know that boss will be, generally speaking, any job that pays money is better than no job and no money.
Lie politely. Please lie. Make up a car in advance if you have to so that you can answer questions about it as necessary. Lie politely, blatantly, with a smile on your face. If an interviewer presses you on this, you do not owe that person honesty. You never owe a bad boss (or potential boss) honesty. Do whatever you need to do to get that job.
And then, after you start working there, if anyone asks (and only if they ask!), your previously-reliable totally-not-at-all-fictional car will have unexpectedly broken down and left you taking public transportation. Tragic! What a terrible and unexpected thing to happen! And so terrible and unexpected that it’s taking so long to replace your totally non-fictional car! How horrible!
Also, if at all possible, keep looking for another job. I know it’s really hard to do when you work full-time and you’re exhausted, especially if you have kids, but you can do this.
And yeah, nothing is simple when you’re poor.
This is what I was trying to convey here, but this is more succinct. Like I said, “just walk out” feels like a privileged take that (righteously, if not paternalistically) misses the part about being poor and actually needing a job. So yes, lie. Lie politely, lie creatively, lie with a smile, but if you’re existing in poverty and need a job? Then LIE about having transportation. And don’t feel bad about it either. If an employer illegally asks a question they shouldn’t, then you’re allowed to lie about it. Hell, if they try to fire you about it later, threaten to take them to court for illegally asking to begin with. In the meantime, put some food in your belly. Catch up on a few bills. Buy some warm clothes. Feed that baby. You can work everything else out later.
Bosses, landlords, and cops forfeited their right to being told the truth by signing up for those jobs
who is telling men that having gray in their hair is ugly. why are they fucking lying
who is telling women that having gray in their hair is ugly!!!!!!! why are they fucking lying!!!!!!!
KOKOBOT - The Airbnb-Owned Tech Startup - Data Mining Tumblr Users' Mental Health Crises for "Content"
I got this message from a bot, and honestly? If I was a bit younger and not such a jaded bitch with a career in tech, I might have given it an honest try. I spent plenty of time in a tough situation without access to any mental health resources as a teen, and would have been sucked right in.
Chatting right from your phone, and being connected with people who can help you? Sounds nice. Especially if you believe the testimonials they spam you with (tw suicide / self harm mention in below images)
But I was getting a weird feeling, so I went to read the legalese.
I couldn't even get through the fine-print it asked me to read and agree to, without it spamming the hell out of me. Almost like they expect people to just hit Yes? But I'm glad I stopped to read, because:
I was curious about their business model. They're a venture-capitol based tech startup, owned by Airbnb, the famous mental health professionals with a focus on ethical business practices./s They're also begging for donations despite having already been given 2.5 million dollars in research funding. (If you want a deep dive on why people throw crazy money at tech startups, see my other post here)
They also use the data they gather from users to conduct research and publish papers. I didn't find them too interesting - other than as a good case study of "People tend to find what they are financially incentivized to find". Predictably, Koko found that Kokobot was beneficial to its users.
So yeah, being a dumbass with too much curiosity, I decided to use the Airbnb-owned Data-Mining Mental Health Chatline anyway. And if you thought it was dangerous sounding from the disclaimers? Somehow it got worse.
(trigger warning / discussions of child abuse / sexual abuse / suicide / violence below the cut - please don't read if you're not in a good place to hear about negligence around pretty horrific topics.)
Kokobot is incredibly predatory and exploitative. I wrote a post about how it exploits minors' empathy and gamifies "giving mental health advice", resulting in an unregulated mess that can only do harm to teens' mental health in the long run.
There are young people on tumblr that actively seek support from KokoBot right now, if you check the tag for recent posts. Those people did not get paid to promote it, so do not harrass them. If you can, direct them towards resources about Kokobot (like this post) that are more transparent about what this company is up to.
This... is DEEPLY DISTURBING.
